I think you make a confusion between hybrid types.

    - mild hybrid car has a very small battery, usually 48V and a small motor named starter. You can't run on that battery, it offers smooth start of engine (due to that starter) and in some conditions, turn the engine off when coasting. If you compare same car with same engine conventional and mild-hybrid you will see there is no significant fuel economy.

    - full hybrid (like Toyota) has a bigger battery, you can run electrically on that battery (1-3km) only if you drive very smoothly. The battery is charged when thermic engine is running and from brake regeneration.

    - plug-in hybrid (like Peugeot 408 plug-in); it is basically a 2in1 car. You can charge your car like an electrical one and you can run 40-60km electrically. When you run out of battery or you need extra power thermic engine will turn on to supply with power and charge the battery. You have a heavier car because of battery weight and a more complex car. It is very efficient if you can fit into that range but become very inefficient when you need to run on thermic engine to charge the battery.

In some countries you could have some benefits (free parking or lower taxes) if you own a hybrid car, regardless what type of hybrid.

I drove my Ford Focus 2 1.6 tdci 90HP from 2006, 220k km (I doubt they were real), until the mechanic became my best friend. :)) I visited him almost every month with different problems, not so expensive but start become annoying after a while. Because I was obsessed to keep all the problems under control, the next owner was very happy to buy a well maintained car. :D

The only thing I regret from the old car is the consumption. I had usually only 4.5l/100km in external, best consumption was 4.2l/100km on 600km road.
